Adventure Design Guide

Before submitting an adventure please review our
Adventure Design Guide.

Submitting an Adventure

There are two ways to submit an adventure to DireKobold.com: mail it in or submit it electronically.

If you e-mail your adventure to us we'll send you an acknowledgement of receipt within a couple of days. All submissions sent via regular mail without a self-addressed stamped envelope(SASE) will not receive a response. This is especially important if you would like your adventure returned.

General Guidelines

  • Make sure you spell check and edit your submission as much as you are able. We're a small operation and much less likely to consider an adventure, even if it's a good one, if it's going to require substantial edits.
  • Familiarize yourself with the Open Gaming License, the D20 system and other D20 products. Make sure you know the rules and that you are only using things which are included in the SRD. We'll handle the legal stuff, but a familiarity on your part will help.
  • Any questions about these guidelines should be directed at: submissions@direkobold.com

Adventure Guidelines:

An adventure style guide can be found here. In addition to stylistic considerations the following general guidelines should be observed.:

  • Adventures should be between 5,000 and 15,000 words.
  • Adventures should have something in them for all types of characters.
  • We're most interested in adventures for characters level eight to sixteen.
  • Every adventure should contain, and if possible feature, a new bit of OGC. For example one of the NPC's could be a member of a new prestige class, or the adventure might contain a spellbook full of new spells, etc.
  • If you're using regular mail then make sure your adventure is double spaced with plenty of room in the margins.
  • If submitted electronically the adventure should be in .rtf or MS Word format.
  • We will not consider adventures that have been simultaneously submitted to other publications.
  • Make sure to use a clean, easy to read font.
  • Make sure that your name and contact information is included with the adventure, in addition to an approximate word count.
  • Every page needs to have a page number on it.

Rights and Payment

DireKobold.com purchases all rights to any adventure accepted for submission.

DireKobold.com pays a basic rate of 1-5 cents per word. The rate any adventure receives is based in large part upon the author's previous writing experience. In addition if the author has already published an adventure on DireKobold.com, the popularity of the previous adventure will be considered. In addition to the monetary payment, the author will receive a complimentary one year subscription to DireKobold.com.
